“Missing” by Everything But the Girl

Everything but the Girl have been making music together and separately for decades. They are well known in the UK and Europe, but only had one hit song in the US, a dance mix of a track from their album Amplified Heart. This was the first song I heard from them, and I became a lifelong fan of their heartfelt, lyrical pop music because of it.

Tracey Thorn’s voice, a lush and subtle alto, was the opposite of American pop singers who all tried to sound like Whitney Houston or Mariah Carrey, overpowering the listener with volume and sonic gymnastics. While her band's music was never the right kind of "pop" for the US pop charts, Thorn is one of the best pop singers of her generation.
