Over the past week, I've been preparing a lengthy and detailed essay explaining my views why Donald Trump won the 2016 election. Upon reading various viewpoints and personal reflection, though, the reason is simple and can be explained in a short paragraph.
Donald Trump was elected President because over 61,000,000 U.S. citizens made a conscious decision to give racism and sexism power. I would guess that most of these citizens don't consider themselves racist or sexist. There are a number of reasons for their voting the way they did. In the end, though, those reasons don't matter. What matters is that, when given the choice between Hate, Greed, and Fear or anything else, they chose Hate, Greed, and Fear. And now we all will soon be living with the consequences.
