Stick This In Your MP3 Player: “Snowbird” by Clark

What makes a good Winter song? Sadness, melancholy, and slowness don’t work – it’s too cold and dark for that. Winter music has to have energy and a strong inner pulse. It also has to sparkle, even if it’s introspective.

The new track from Clark is a good Winter song. Although it isn’t strictly Musique Concrète, it has that feel, with harsh sounds and metallic rhythms combining to form a flowing, subtle whole, with the slightest suggestion of sleigh bells in the distance. And it isn’t made up of verses and chorus but wordless passages. It will be excellent aural accompaniment to starting out the window at the frozen tundra.
