Review: Veronica Guerin

Veronica Guerin is the story of one of Ireland's national heroes, a journalist whose exposure of criminal drug syndicates ultimately led to the passing of new laws that made drug dealing in the country much tougher.

Cate Blanchett is solid in the lead role in a fairly straight-ahead story of one woman's efforts to use the power of the press to address a major social ill. Two things that are also clear, however, are that 1. her efforts are also and attempts to satisfy a fame-and-thrill-seeking part of her personality, and 2. her recklessness blinds her to the very real (and some would say obvious) dangers involved in taking on heavily-armed organized criminals. I'm still not sure if I think she is a fearless hero or a glory-hound whose efforts just happened to lead to good results.

It's a well-acted, nicely-paced movie, well worth the time to see.
