Kind of Blue’s 50th Anniversary

I might be heading out to the Chicago Jazz Festival this weekend. Speaking of jazz, this year marks the 50th anniversary of one of the most influential American music recordings ever made, Miles Davis’ “Kind of Blue.”

Slate wrote up a pretty good article on how the album was conceived and why it’s so groundbreaking. One point I don’t agree with the author on is how he describes the album as something even people who hate jazz enjoy. I think it’s more the case that this album is the record a person can listen to in order to find out if they like jazz or not. It might be a quibbling difference, but it’s an important one, IMO.
