Music Notes: My Radio Show Set List from September 1 2013

Here’s a list of what I played for my most recent set on September 1st:

Cocteau Twins, “Summerhead” from Four-Calendar Café (Capitol)
Animal Collective, “Summertime Clothes” from Merriweather Post Pavilion (Domino)
Gauntlet Hair, “Top Bunk” from Gauntlet Hair (Dead Oceans)

I figured I’d start the set off with some of my favorite “summer” songs. Cocteau Twins isn’t as recent as the other two but sounds just as good now as when I first heard it years ago.

No Age, “No Ground” from An Object (Sub Pop)
El Guincho, “Bombay” from Pop Negro (Young Turks)
Islands, “Wave Forms” from Ski Mask (Manque)
When Clouds Attack, “Pulsor” from Young Blood (Self-Released)
Moderat, “Bad Kingdom” from II (Mute)
Kirin J. Callinan, “Halo” from Embracism (XL)
Miles Davis, “John McLaughlin” from Bitches Brew (Columbia/Legacy)
John Coltrane, “Naima” from Giant Steps (Atlantic)

A couple of jazz tracks in honor of this weekend’s Jazz Festival in Grant Park, although I’m planning to work at least some jazz into all my shows. Jazz is different from other genres in how the most popular recordings tend not to be clichés – they truly are among the best the genre has to offer.

Lord Dying, “Dreams of Mercy” from Summon the Faithless (Relapse)

Another titanic Metal track from a label that’s been on a roll. I’ve reviewed a few of Relapse's their albums for the CHIRP library recently – really good stuff.

The Commodores, “Easy” from Commodores (Motown)
Georgia Ann Muldrow, “Larva” from Worthnothings (Stones Throw)
A Place to Bury Strangers, “In Your Heart” from A Place to Bury Strangers (Mute)
Diamond Plate, “Running Dry” from Pulse (Earache)
Johnny Osbourne, “Truths and Rights” from Truths and Rights (Studio One)
Barrence Whitfield & The Savages, “Bread” from Dig Thy Savage Soul (Bloodshot)
Tennessee Ernie Ford, “Sixteen Tons” from Sixteen Tons (Bear Family)
The Members, “Working Girl” from Uprhythm, Downbeat (Arista)
Pissed Jeans, “Cafeteria Food” from Honeys (Sub Pop)

I put this group of songs together in honor of Labor Day. We could probably do an entire day of great songs about working, labor, and money. I’ve got a bunch that didn’t fit here that I’ll be playing at some point. Pissed Jeans did a great set at Pitchfork this past July.

Crocodiles, “Gimme Some Annihilation” from Crimes of Passion (Frenchkiss)
Bruce Springsteen, “Atlantic City” from Nebraska (Columbia)
Andy Wagner, “American Dreams” from Silos and Smokestacks (Self-Released)
Little Milton, “We're Gonna Make It” (MCA)
Bombadil, “Angeline” from Metrics of Affection (Ramseur)
Begin by Gathering Supplies, “Actors and Musicians” from Let Us Get You Pregnant (Self-Released) The Pogues, “Down All The Days” from Peace and Love (Island)

I’ll be back in the studio on Sunday Sept. 8 from 2-4 pm CST with a new show. Tune in to CHIRP Radio then and any time on CHIRP Radio for great music!
