My Year of One-Hit Wonders: Everlast - "What It's Like" (1998)

Everlast first came to fame with House of Pain's "Jump Around," a song that's guaranteed to be playing in a sports arena near you. As a solo artist, he released this song, using hip-hop and blues to talk about something that mainstream pop music and mainstream hip-hop hasn’t talked about since this song came out, namely, the struggles of everyday people.

A straightforward, powerful request to exercise a little empathy before judging others, this song is as relevant today as it was when it was released, maybe even more so, considering how the gulf between the haves and have nots continues to widen and the voices of "personal responsibility" continue to promote the politics of Every Man for Himself.

"You've all seen the man at the liquor store begging for your change
The hair on his face is dirty, dreadlocked and full of mange
He asks a man for what he can spare, with shame in his eyes
'Get a job, you fuckin' slob' is all he replies
Well, God forbid you ever had to walk in my man's shoes
'Cause then you really might know what it's like to sing the blues..."
