Great Short Films: El Guincho – “Bombay”

Here is a fantastic music video from Spanish musician El Guincho. The look and feel is a throwback to the ‘70s and ‘80s, when putting music to video was just getting started. The opening section is a nod to Carl Sagan and his work for public television, and the band’s studio-based performance scenes remind me a lot of New Order’s classic “The Perfect Kiss.”

There’s a lot going on here, and it’s definitely sexual. But it’s not exactly pornographic, especially by today’s Internet standards. The word I think best fits for it is “erotic,” an adjective I think has gotten lost in American culture between the political and media forces of Puritan chastity and show-everything depravity.

The song, an infectiously danceable synth and drum machine club-mix with strong Spanish flavors, is outstanding as well.

WARNING: There is nudity and sexual situations in this film. It’s definitely Not Safe for Work, and not appropriate for younger or more sensitive people.
